Rivers United have officially secured the services of midfielder Ani Chigozie ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The former Niger Tornadoes playmaker has committed to a two-year contract, tying him to the Port Harcourt-based club until 2028.
Chigozie’s arrival marks the fourth major addition for manager Finidi George during this transfer window, following the recent acquisitions of Chikamso Amaefula, Blessed Iyamu, and Ekebuike James from Kun Khalifat.
From Relegation Battle to Continental Ambitions
Chigozie spent last season with Niger Tornadoes, playing a pivotal role in keeping the Minna-based team afloat.
Tornadoes narrowly escaped the drop, finishing 15th on the log with 48 points—just one point clear of the relegation zone.
The attacking midfielder now transitions from a survival scrap to a championship charge.
Joining the Pride of Rivers, who finished as league runners-up last season, Chigozie will not only help challenge for the NPFL title but will also feature prominently in the club’s upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
A Rapid Rise Through the NPFL
Chigozie’s professional journey began at Coal City United before his talents were spotted by coach Yemi Olanrewaju, who brought him to Enyimba for the 2024/25 season.
After a one-year stint with the Big Elephant, he moved to Niger Tornadoes, where he quickly became a key figure in their midfield.
Now, the dynamic playmaker is set to begin the next chapter of his career in the Garden City.
