Roadside Fruits Vendor Killed in Bori, Ogoni Rights Activist Urges Local Authorities to Beef off Security

A death incident that occurred in Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, has generated so much tension within the metropolitan city.

It has also drawn strong condemnations from well-meaning individuals and leaders from across Ogoni, who have expressed various magnitudes of disgust over the heightened spate of violence and killings being registered around Bori in recent time.

The most significant reaction is one coming from the President of Ogoni Liberarion initiative (OLI), Douglas Fabeke, who took to his official Facebook page on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 to condemn the ugly trend, as well as call on relevant authorities to strengthen security in the Bori metropolis.

He stated that Bori was not merely a town but a very strategic city harbouring different categories of people: mothers, fathers, farmers and traders, who needed to be protected so that they could go about their daily business without fear.

Describing the recent killing involving a fruit vendor that sells banana along the roadside, Fabeke said he knew her personally and usually patronised her whenever he visited the city, adding that she was a native of neighbouring Kaani community doing her business among other women.

“They are always in groups, hardworking and eager to earn a living. On occasions when I cannot buy from everyone, I share money with them as support,” he narrated.

The concerned Ogoni leader specifically called out to the current Local Government administration and security agencies within the jurisdiction to rise to the occasion and beef off security in the town in order to ensure protection of lives and property, the core mandate of political governance.

“I urge the Khana Local Government Administration and all security agencies operating in Bori to immediately step up measures to protect lives and property in Bori Town, the traditional home and headquarters of the Ogoni Nation,” he said.

While Fabeke expressed appreciation for the efforts made so far by the Chairman of the Local Government Area, Thomas Bariere, in tackling security challenges in the area, he invited the Council’s increased to focus on Bori Town. He emphasized that good governance is depicted by an atmosphere of peace in which people pursue their livelihoods freely.

He added that though security is said to be everybody’s business the role of the government in maintaining a secured society remains uncontestable, saying that those carrying out the killings in Bori are not ghost but humans that can be tracked by the authority.

“They are known. They should be tracked, apprehended, and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Fabeke asserted.

He concluded by condemning the fatal attack in its strongest tern, describing it as barbaric, unacceptable, and one which should not be allowed to continue so that the historic city might become safer for traders, students, workers and all residents.
