The Rivers State Ministry of Health has joined the global community in commemorating World No Tobacco Day 2026, calling for intensified efforts to combat tobacco and nicotine addiction.

Addressing journalists in a press briefing to commemorate the event on Monday June 1, 2026, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Vincent Wachukwu said this year’s theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” draws attention to the strategies used by tobacco companies to attract users, especially young people.

He noted that through flavoured products, attractive packaging, and deceptive marketing, the industry continues to lure first-time users while concealing the serious health risks associated with tobacco use.

Wachukwu described tobacco consumption as one of the leading preventable causes of death globally, linking it to heart disease, cancer, stroke, and other chronic illnesses. He added that beyond health risks, tobacco use also places a heavy economic burden on families and the healthcare system.

“The industry continues to create new pathways to addiction while masking the devastating health consequences of tobacco use.

Tobacco use remains one of the preventable causes of death worldwide, and a major contributor to health diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and other non-communicable diseases”.

The Permanent Secretary expressed concern over the growing use of emerging nicotine products among adolescents and young adults, warning that many are designed to appear harmless while fostering long-term addiction.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government, under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to strengthen tobacco control policies, enforce existing regulations, and promote public awareness on the dangers of tobacco use.

According to him, the state is collaborating with stakeholders to improve policies and protect residents from exposure to second-hand smoke, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and youths.

“The Rivers State Government, ably led by Sir Siminalayi Fubara, through the Ministry of Health remains committed to strengthening tobacco control measures, supporting public education initiatives, and working with stakeholders to create healthier and safer environment for all residents”.

Wachukwu also commended healthcare workers, civil society organisations, development partners, and the media for their role in promoting healthier lifestyles across the state.
He urged residents to reject tobacco products, support smoke-free environments, and take active steps in educating young people about the dangers of nicotine addiction.

“We commend the healthcare workers, development partners, civil society organisations, educational institutions, community leaders, and the media for their continued support in advancing tobacco control and promoting healthier lifestyles throughout Rivers State”.

The Ministry emphasised that that collective action is key to reducing preventable diseases and building a healthier society, noting that the fight against tobacco use begins with the decisions made today.
