The Rivers State University (RSU) has intensified security measures across its campus, particularly around student hostels, following recent cases of theft involving a few students.
The university management says proactive steps are already being taken to ensure safety, deter intruders, and maintain calm within the student community.

In a press release issued on Friday, August 1, 2025, the Registrar, Ibimonia Harry, confirmed that two students, one male and one female were apprehended during the week in Hostels C and F.
The female student was caught stealing money and clothing in Hostel C, while the male student in Hostel F was found with a stolen laptop. Both students have been evicted from the hostels, handed over to their parents, and will face the university’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
The university emphasised that its security unit responded swiftly to the incidents and that further steps are already in motion to prevent any recurrence.
The statement read, “The Management of the University calls on all students and staff to remain calm and vigilant, as the School Security and Security Agents are actively deployed throughout the hostels and the entire campus to deal as appropriate with any further incident within the University campus.”
As part of immediate actions, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, visited Hostel C on Friday and directed the establishment of a permanent security post in front of the building.
He also ordered increased deployment of security personnel around the hostel, and the installation of surveillance and protective devices around the drainage, an area suspected to have been used as an access point by intruders.
He further instructed hostel porters to be more alert and to properly screen all visitors entering student hostels.
This comes amidst concerns recently raised by some students and parents about theft in female hostels, including Hostel H, where reports claim valuables such as mobile phones were stolen during early morning hours.
The university reassured parents and guardians that student safety remains a top priority.
“In the circumstance, we wish to reassure all parents, staff and students that their safety is guaranteed,” the Registrar stated.
