Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has sparked conversations in the Nigerian film industry after declaring that “most Nigerian actors are lazy.”

Arinze, whose career spans over three decades, made the remark in a recent interview while assessing the state of Nollywood and the work ethic of today’s generation of actors.

He argued that while the industry has achieved remarkable growth and global visibility, many actors are more concerned with fame than with discipline and honing their craft.

“Most Nigerian actors are lazy.”

“They want quick fame, they want to blow overnight without doing the work,” Arinze said.

His comments have stirred strong reactions across the industry and among fans.

Entertainment analysts and film enthusiasts acknowledged that Arinze’s statement reflects growing concerns about declining standards in Nollywood, citing issues like rushed productions, poor line delivery, and reliance on social media popularity rather than acting skill.

Some fans echoed his sentiments on Facebook and other platforms, pointing to the rise of certain “YouTube movies” as evidence of falling standards.

“Honestly, some YouTube films are gradually kpaing the Nollywood that our veterans built,” one viewer wrote in reaction.

So far, no official response has been issued by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) or other associations representing Nollywood practitioners.

However, the debate has triggered calls for stronger mentorship, better training opportunities, and stricter professional guidelines for upcoming actors.

Arinze’s comments, though controversial, have reignited discussion about Nollywood’s future, whether it will prioritize speed and popularity, or return to deeper investments in quality storytelling, craft, and discipline.
