Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja accompanied by a large number of supporters following a bench warrant earlier issued for his arrest.

The activist arrived at the court premises alongside members of his movement and supporters who gathered to express solidarity as proceedings commenced.

The court had previously ordered his arrest after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing in a case instituted against him over alleged defamatory statements made on social media.

Security personnel were deployed around the court complex to maintain order as supporters chanted slogans and demanded what they described as the protection of free speech and civil liberties.

Addressing journalists shortly before entering the courtroom, Sowore maintained that he had no intention of evading the judicial process.

“I have always respected the courts and I am here to defend myself against the charges brought against me,” he said.

The activist is facing charges linked to publications allegedly considered defamatory by the complainants. He had earlier pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The proceedings attracted considerable public attention, with activists, political associates and supporters monitoring developments at the court.

One of the supporters at the court premises said, “We are here to stand with him and to ensure that justice is done.”

The matter was expected to continue with the court considering issues surrounding the earlier arrest warrant and subsequent legal proceedings.
