The Super Eagles of Nigeria produced a confident and mature display to defeat Algeria 2–0 and book their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-finals on Saturday evening in Marrakech.

Super Eagles beat Algeria

It was a performance that shows Nigeria’s growing belief and balance as they continue their push for a fourth continental crown.

Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams settled the contest, but the scoreline only told part of the story. Nigeria were in control for long periods and showed quality in both defence and attack.

Super Eagles Dominate Early Exchanges in Marrakech

The Super Eagles started on the front foot, pressing aggressively and enjoying most of the possession in the opening stages. Their intent was clear as they pushed Algeria deep and created the better chances.

Ademola Lookman tested the Algerian goalkeeper with a fierce strike from distance, while Calvin Bassey came agonisingly close from close range, only to see his effort cleared off the line. VAR checks confirmed the ball had not crossed fully.

Nigeria continued to threaten, with Akor Adams missing a clear opening after capitalising on a defensive mistake.

Despite going into the break goalless, the Super Eagles looked sharper, more organised, and more dangerous than their opponents.

Osimhen Leads the Way as Super Eagles Finish Strong

Nigeria wasted no time after halftime. Just moments into the second half, Osimhen rose above the Algerian defence to head home a perfectly delivered cross from Bruno Onyemaechi.

The goal gave the Super Eagles the breakthrough their dominance deserved and marked Osimhen’s fourth of the tournament.

The pressure did not ease. Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider. A well-timed pass from Alex Iwobi sent him through on goal, and the Galatasaray forward unselfishly squared the ball for Adams, who kept his composure to score Nigeria’s second.

With a two-goal cushion, the Super Eagles managed the game intelligently. They stayed compact, controlled the tempo, and limited Algeria to half-chances as the clock ran down.

At full time, Nigeria celebrated a convincing win and what many consider their most complete performance so far in the tournament.

The Eric Chelle men now move into the semi-finals full of confidence and belief that the AFCON trophy is within reach and will prepare to battle Morocco, the host nation.
