Residents of Odukpani Local Government Area were thrown into shock after security operatives arrested a man identified as Akaninyene over allegations linking him to a series of killings and disappearances in the area.

The suspect was reportedly captured during a joint operation involving personnel of the Nigerian Army and tactical security teams in a forest location within Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community, near Creektown.

According to sources, the operation followed intelligence gathered after repeated reports of missing persons from surrounding communities.

Security operatives reportedly traced the suspect to a hidden camp inside the forest, where he allegedly attempted to escape after trying to access a weapon before he was overpowered and arrested.

During the search of the area, operatives allegedly uncovered eight shallow graves said to contain headless bodies buried within the compound. Plantain trees were reportedly planted over the burial spots in what investigators suspect was an attempt to conceal the crimes.

Sources further claimed that the suspect confessed to being involved in the killing of several persons, allegedly admitting that more than 30 victims may have been murdered over time.

Investigators also believe a female accomplice may have assisted in luring victims before the attacks were carried out.

The latest suspected killing reportedly triggered alarm among residents after cries for help were allegedly heard from a victim on Tuesday night, prompting community youths and leaders to alert security agencies.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said authorities are still verifying details surrounding the incident.

The arrest has sparked fear and outrage within the community, with residents calling for a thorough investigation and justice for victims and their families.
