Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN Rivers state chapter) 5-a-side football team fell just short of tournament glory at the Valentino Swiss Hotel & Apartments Birthday competition, exiting during a tense semi-final showdown.
SWAN’s journey to the knockout stage was anything but ordinary. Managed by Charles Mayuku—who took the tactical reins less than 24 hours before the opening whistle—the squad initially clawed their way into the semi-finals by emerging as the tournament’s best loser.
Underdogs Defy the Odds in Group Stage
During the qualifying rounds, a starting lineup captained by Ghanaman and featuring Tonye, Temple, Sir Kris, and Qwiza ignited the pitch with a vibrant, attacking style that quickly won over the crowd.
Despite controlling massive spells of the match and receiving a tactical boost from substitutes Ibisaki, Wale, Osas, and Testimony, SWAN played out a goalless draw against Elekahia All Stars.
They ultimately dropped the ensuing penalty shootout 1-0, but the unique tournament format still handed the resilient media side a lifeline into the final four.
In the semi-finals, the SWAN journalists faced a daunting test against a star-studded Crystal All Stars lineup, which featured former Sharks FC and Rivers United veterans including Obomate Frederick, Patrick Nakata, Newman, Daddy Musa, and Eremasara.
Undeterred by their opponent’s pedigree and some heavily questionable officiating that seemed to tilt the pitch in Crystal’s favor, SWAN dug deep.
Semi-Final Heartbreak and Birthday Celebrations
They fought to another gritty 0-0 stalemate at the end of regulation. Unfortunately, lightning struck twice in the shootout; SWAN struggled from the spot, falling 2-0 to the veterans.
Reflecting on the dramatic exit in his post-match press conference, Coach Mayuku had nothing but praise for his squad’s relentless spirit.
He emphasised that despite carrying the underdog tag into the competition, his players proved they could go toe-to-toe with the region’s finest veterans.
Beyond the intense action on the pitch, the event doubled as a celebratory milestone.
The definitive highlight of the day off the field came when players and fans gathered for a special cake-cutting ceremony to honor the birthday of Mr. Ibrahim Raymond Olagundoye, the CEO of Valentino Swiss Hotel & Suites.
