The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a 29-year-old woman, Edeh Osinachi, following allegations of severe physical abuse against a 17-year-old girl in Awka.
The suspect was handed over to the Police on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, by the Anambra State Ministry of Education as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard students and pupils across the state. The victim, who is reportedly the suspect’s house help, was discovered with serious injuries by school officials during a teaching session.

According to preliminary investigations as stated by Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, teachers noticed unusual marks and injuries on the girl’s body and immediately made inquiries. During the interaction, the victim disclosed that her guardian had inflicted the injuries after she allegedly used her guardian’s mobile phone without permission.
The victim further alleged that Osinachi punished her by pressing a hot electric iron on her body, causing severe burns. During police interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to committing the act.
The Anambra State Police Command has commended the school authorities for their vigilance and swift action, describing it as a crucial step in protecting vulnerable children. The Command assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that the suspect would be prosecuted in line with the law.
The Police also used the opportunity to advise parents and guardians to ensure they only take on responsibilities they can adequately manage, warning that neglect and poor supervision can expose children to abuse in the care of others.
