President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given approval for the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a take-off grant of N15 billion for the project.

The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to expand police training capacity and enhance institutional development within the Nigeria Police Force.

This was made known in a statement issued on Monday 20th April by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The statement explained that the decision is in line with the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the academy’s current campus in Wudil into a multi-campus system across the country.

Funding for the project will be drawn from the 2026 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) allocation. The N15 billion grant is expected to cover key infrastructure, including academic facilities, student hostels, and essential training equipment.

According to the Presidency, Erinja was selected following recommendations from a high-level meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

Discussions at the meeting reportedly focused on student admission capacity, funding, academic standards, and the growing personnel needs of the police.

The statement added that President Tinubu is confident the new campus will enhance governance within the academy, improve police education, and contribute to national security.

The approval comes amid ongoing police recruitment and the Federal Government’s push to reform and modernise security institutions across the country.
