The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, expressed immense satisfaction on Monday, June 16, 2025, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially commissioned the long-awaited Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, an infrastructure venture valued at $470 million and first awarded over eight years ago.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in Abuja to mark President Tinubu’s second year in office, Wike emphasized the significance of the project and the administration’s commitment to addressing the lingering challenges in the capital’s water distribution system.

The water supply initiative, according to Wike, was initially launched in 2017 as part of a collaboration with the African Development Initiative.
The project was designed to enhance water infrastructure across four major loops: one, two, five, and six, critical areas for water distribution in Abuja.
Wike disclosed that funding for the project was largely sourced from the Chinese government, which covered 85% of the total cost. The Nigerian Federal Government and the FCT Administration jointly financed the remaining 15%.

While the project had stalled for several years, Wike credited President Tinubu’s leadership and prioritization of public utilities for its eventual completion.
“Although the project was awarded since 2017, your administration has completed it, and today we are inaugurating it to improve water supply in the city,” Wike stated.
He emphasized that the renewed push under Tinubu’s government led to the revitalization and final execution of the project in just two years.

The minister noted that reliable access to clean water had been a persistent issue for residents of the FCT, and this project marks a turning point.
Wike also referenced ongoing efforts to extend potable water access beyond the urban core of Abuja.
He reminded the audience that earlier in 2024, the FCT Administration entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese construction company to expand water infrastructure to underserved satellite towns.

“I want to say today that we have almost completed the procurement process to provide water to residents of Bwari, Kubwa, and Karu, among other communities,” he announced.
“So, Mr. President, you are not only providing water to residents in the cities; you are also providing water to residents in satellite towns,” Wike said, showcasing the inclusive approach of the administration.
The commissioning of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project is expected to significantly enhance water distribution, improve public health outcomes, and support Abuja’s growing population.
