Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to confront insecurity across Nigeria, assuring that efforts to safeguard citizens and assist vulnerable groups will remain on course.

The President made this known on Sunday 22nd March while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence as part of Eid el-Fitr celebrations.

He described insecurity as a significant obstacle to national growth, stressing that his government is strengthening both domestic and international partnerships to tackle the challenge.

According to Tinubu, “The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity in the country. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity.”

The President disclosed that security cooperation was a key focus during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom, where discussions centered on equipment and operational support.

He added that he also held extensive talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on similar collaborations.

“They are collaborating with us for equipment and support, and I am making efforts to reach other nations,” he said.

Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Friday after a three-day state visit to the UK, during which they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and also met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

On the economy, the President cautioned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could trigger inflationary pressures and weaken purchasing power. He urged state governments to implement measures to ease the burden on citizens, particularly in the areas of energy and transportation.

“We should care more for the vulnerable,” he added, noting that labour unions may push for additional support amid rising global economic pressures.

Tinubu also called on governors to remain committed to policies that directly improve the welfare of Nigerians and to support ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities nationwide.

He commended Vice President Shettima for his recent condolence visit to Borno State and assured residents of improved security through the deployment of modern technology.

Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, congratulated the President on the successful UK visit and the strengthening of bilateral ties.

He further revealed that discussions on the creation of state police are ongoing, with the forum expected to submit its recommendations to the National Assembly to enable the necessary legal framework.
