President Bola Tinubu is expected to receive the draft of the proposed National Policing Bill on September 3, 2026, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing architecture.
The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents on Monday August 3, 2026 after a meeting of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Gbajabiamila, the proposed legislation is designed to provide the legal and operational framework for policing across the country, including the relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and the proposed State Police structure, should the constitutional amendment establishing state policing receive the required approvals.
He explained that although discussions on state policing have advanced, the Nigeria Police Force remains the only constitutionally recognised policing institution in the country until the amendment to the Constitution is passed by the National Assembly and endorsed by the required number of State Houses of Assembly.
The Chief of Staff said the National Policing Bill is a critical component of the ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security, improve law enforcement, and create a more responsive policing system capable of addressing the nation’s evolving security challenges.
Gbajabiamila also appealed to Nigerians, civil society organisations, security experts, and other stakeholders to actively participate in the reform process by submitting ideas and recommendations that will enrich the proposed legislation and ensure it reflects the aspirations of citizens.
The presentation of the draft bill to President Tinubu is expected to mark another significant milestone in the Federal Government’s broader agenda to modernise Nigeria’s policing system and enhance public safety across the country.
