The administration of United States President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, according to Riley Moore, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, who said Washington is paying keen attention to how the country’s next electoral process is conducted.
Moore made the remarks in an interview with NoireTV published on Sunday, July 5, 2026, saying the conduct, execution and outcome of the elections would remain an important issue for the Trump administration.

Responding to a question on whether the United States could do more to support credible elections in Nigeria, Moore said the administration would be closely observing developments ahead of and during the polls.
“What I’d say is that we’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed.”
“And that’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to.”
Moore also disclosed that the U.S. House of Representatives was considering an appropriations bill containing provisions that could shape future relations with Nigeria, particularly on issues relating to religious freedom and security cooperation.
“We’re working on Chris Smith’s bill, which obviously I’m a co-sponsor of that bill.”
“But I’d say, more importantly, what people need to pay attention to is the appropriations bill that we’re going to have on the floor today.”
He said the legislation was expected to become law and would include provisions that could influence future engagement between both countries.
“That bill’s likely to become law.”
“We’re about to, hopefully, pass that here today.”
“And so there’s some pretty strong and aggressive language in that bill that’s going to be binding as it relates to our relationship to Nigeria moving forward.”
Moore further revealed that he planned to continue discussions on Nigeria-related issues with Trump, saying he was scheduled to meet the President as part of ongoing engagements with the administration.
His remarks come as political consultations and preparations gradually intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
As of Monday, July 6, 2026, the United States government had not announced an official election observation mission or any policy action specifically tied to the conduct of the polls.
