Despite heavy rains threatening to stall the historic proceedings, the ancient palace grounds of King Perekule stood resilient, echoing with drums, dances, and destiny on Saturday, June 28, 2025. On this momentous day, Bonny Kingdom bore witness to a majestic convergence of tradition and transformation, as three illustrious sons of Ibani land — Chief Sotonye Banigo, Chief Dr. Daddy Ibiewotogha Dappa Allison, and Chief Adienyesigha John Philip Halliday — were recognized and inducted in royal sequence as Se-Alapu (Country Chiefs).
From the rhythms of ancestral drums to the rising voices of a hopeful people, this wasn’t merely a ceremonial festivity. It was a reaffirmation of who the Bonny people are, what they stand for, and where they aspire to go.

The recognitions and inductions, which effectively emplaced the new entrants as three pillars of a renewed Council, were officiated by His Majesty, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, Edward I, Perekule XI — who as Amanyanabo-in-Council with his Chiefs, is the custodian of Bonny’s sacred traditions and sovereign of Ibani identity.
The three new chiefs stepped into ancestral roles that blend history with modern vision:
– Se-Alabo Sotonye Banigo of Banigo House, a seasoned security expert and elder statesman, was first to be presented — now a symbol of strategic guardianship and ancestral strength.

– Se-Alabo Dr. Daddy Ibiewotogha Dappa Allison of Nwaoju Allison House, the 20th scion of Bonny Kingdom’s oldest chieftaincy family, emerged as the scholarly bridge between ancient legacies and future-ready knowledge.

– Se-Alabo Adienyesigha John Philip Halliday of Awusa Halliday House, brought with him political acumen, entrepreneurial insight, and the hope of a new generation.

Though the heavens opened with persistent downpour, the ceremony pressed on — uninterrupted in spirit, rich in colour, and layered with symbolism. It was a visual spectacle: regal beads, lion-head cloaks, Ibani masquerades in sacred trance, war songs vibrating through the palace court, and ululating women in radiant coral.
But beyond the visuals, the deeper resonance lay in what this ceremony signified: the alignment of wisdom, vision, and custodianship, poised to drive cultural continuity and community development.
Held in the sacred courtyard of the King Perekule Palace, the ceremony spanned from mid-morning through the evening into the night. Despite the heavy rains, the mood among attendees remained celebratory. Locals say, “Rain on coronation day is the spirits’ confirmation”. Thousands gathered — from palace elders and visiting dignitaries to jubilant women, children, and onlookers watching via Kristina Reports’ livestream.

The symbolism of triple leadership in a time of change was evident in this season of reflection and rebirth, as Bonny Kingdom needed more than ceremony — it needed a statement. This triple ceremony came at a time when the people crave renewed leadership, ethical stewardship, and homegrown solutions to modern challenges.
Each chief personifies a pillar of what the Ibani society urgently needs: Banigo reflects security and unity of House and homeland, Allison brings education, environmental foresight, and cultural revival, while Halliday offers strategic governance and youth engagement. Together, their emergence is not a coincidence but a calculated renaissance — culturally rooted, spiritually timed, and politically resonant.
To discerning eyes, it is obvious that these ceremonies connect to Bonny Kingdom’s larger aspirations. Bonny Island, a coastal jewel of Nigeria, sits at a historic crossroads. While it boasts rich oil reserves, elite institutions, and global recognition through history and now the presence of multinationals and beyond, it also faces youth unemployment, cultural dilution, and economic disparity.

In recent years, Bonny’s narrative has tilted between developmental promises and social realities. From massive infrastructural investments to civic calls for greater transparency, the people have yearned for leaders who understand both ancestral depth and modern complexity. This ceremony appears to have answered that call.
It drew the line between leadership as ornament and leadership as instrument. These chiefs — especially when viewed alongside figures like Se-Alabo Clinton Dan-Jumbo, who just days after his ingress into the revered Bonny Chiefs Council, has championed civic litigation, environmental activism, and traditional sovereignty — are part of a new cadre of chiefs willing to sweat, not just shine.
Saturday’s cynosure turned out a cultural revival cloaked in rain and royalty. To the children who watched in awe, to the mothers who danced barefoot on wet floors, and to the elders who whispered prayers under their breath — this was more than a day of feathers. It was a day of covenant. A silent pact between the past and future.
The coronation invoked nostalgia for the Bonny of old while promising a Bonny reborn — where tradition guides technology, where culture partners with commerce, and where identity becomes not a relic but a roadmap.

A Final Word: Three Chiefs, One Destiny — A Kingdom Awakened
These triple recognitions were not only historic in sequence — it was profound in meaning. It redefined what it means to wear a title, to inherit a name, and to sit on a stool. It gave the Bonny people a renewed reason to believe — not just in their past, but in their potential. The drums may have stopped, and the rains may have receded, but the memory of June 28, 2025, will linger. A day where three stools were activated, and one destiny was affirmed. Bonny has not only celebrated tradition. It has ushered in a future worth writing about.
