The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82, has triggered a flurry of mixed reactions across the country. As Nigeria observed a national public holiday on Tuesday in his honour, citizens reflected on the complex legacy of a man who once ruled as both a military Head of State and a two-term civilian President.
President Buhari, who served as military Head of State from 1983–1985 and later returned to power from 2015 to 2023 as a democratically elected leader, was laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Daura, Katsina State, following Islamic rites.

In the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where Tuesday’s holiday allowed many to stay home or attend local gatherings, several residents shared their thoughts on Buhari’s passing in street interviews.
“I’m indifferent, to be honest,” said Chukwudi Mba. “He lived a successful life. He led the country twice and left a mark in history. His family is set for life. Yes, his policies didn’t favour many of us, but you can’t deny he had a full and impactful journey.”
Fatima Danlami, a small business owner in Wuse, expressed her frustration:
“I have nothing against him personally, but I still can’t get over the fact that it was under his regime I had to buy our own money. Imagine spending ₦3,000 to get ₦10,000. That period was so frustrating, it felt like the system was punishing ordinary people.”
Still, some Abuja residents mourned his death with admiration.

“His death is really sad,” said Musa Bako, a taxi driver in Maitama. “He was a great Muslim and a disciplined leader. Even if everyone didn’t agree with him, he always stood for what he believed in. That kind of conviction is rare.”
Others saw his tenure as a turning point in Nigeria’s economic and social decline.
“Let’s not sugar-coat anything,” said Bolaji Adeyemi, a university student. “Buhari’s presidency laid the foundation for the hardship we’re facing now.”
“Things began to deteriorate under his leadership, and it’s only gotten worse with Tinubu. If Buhari had made better decisions, we might not be in this situation.”
Online, social media platforms reflected this divide. While some users posted tributes and called for prayers, others revisited controversial policies, especially those tied to economic instability, insecurity, and currency reforms. As the country continues to reflect on Buhari’s passing, one thing remains clear—his life and legacy have left a lasting impression, and Nigerians will be debating it for years to come.
