In a bold and historic move to end the protracted leadership crisis within the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers (SCOTR) has inaugurated a Peace Reconciliation Committee tasked with unifying all factions and restoring harmony within the embattled movement.

The Council, led by the Gbenemene Tai Kingdom and Paramount Ruler of Kpite Community, His Royal Majesty (Sir) King Samuel Lebura Nnee, JP, AmbP, FIIM, ACArb, D.Min, formally announced the committee during a solemn ceremony held in Rivers State.

King Nnee, who also serves as the Coordinator and Convener of the Council, revealed that SCOTR has taken a significant legal step by seeking a leave of court in the ongoing litigations involving MOSOP leadership to pave the way for an amicable resolution.

The move follows widespread concern over the decade-long internal disputes that have rocked MOSOP, a globally recognized voice for the Ogoni people, and a key stakeholder in the Niger Delta advocacy landscape.

The newly formed committee is composed of respected academics, clerics, community leaders, and professionals from across Ogoniland and the diaspora.

It is chaired by former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Sunday Lale from Eleme LGA, with Professor Joseph Kinane, Professor Friday Sigalo, Professor Clever Gbanador, Abel Serebe Vurasi, Moses Nsanam, Saturday Nbete, Goda Chu, Keniabaridoo Edoo,  Dinebari Kpuinen, and Paul Nwiado as Secretary.

Accepting the role on behalf of the committee, Professor Lale expressed gratitude to the monarchs for the trust placed in them, describing MOSOP as a “global movement whose survival depends on peace and unity.”

“We are ready to serve with all sense of duty and commitment, this is a historic opportunity for healing and for the revival of MOSOP as the voice of the Ogoni people.”

The inauguration attracted several high-ranking traditional rulers, including His Royal Highness Mene Sunday Kabari Nule II, His Royal Highness Mene B.Y. Deebom of Maa-or Bane, and His Royal Highness King Dr. Amb. Taalor Nwidae Tornwe IV of Bo-Ue Kingdom, alongside other key stakeholders.

With this development, attention now shifts to the committee to deliver tangible results that will not only restore internal cohesion within MOSOP but also rejuvenate its purpose as a symbol of Ogoni identity, resistance, and advocacy for justice within the Niger Delta region.
